Cost and conditions

Is Temia really free?

Yes, permanently and completely. There is no trial period, no subscription trap, no locked features and no advertising. A small line at the bottom of the app shows a donation address – donations are voluntary and unlock nothing.

Do I need an account?

No. The app starts without signing in. You only need an account if you want to use the optional cloud synchronisation.

Do I need internet?

Only for the very first visit. After that Temia keeps working offline.

Devices

Which devices does the app run on?

In the browser on virtually any device (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPad, iPhone, Chromebook) and as an installable app for Android and iOS. A tablet is recommended: large fields are easier to hit.

Can I install the web version like an app?

Yes. Open temia.online and choose “Add to home screen” in the browser menu.

Voices and languages

The voice sounds robotic. What can I do?

Temia uses the voices of your device. In the settings you can pick a different one under “Voice”. Better voices come from installing additional language packs in your operating system – on Windows the “Natural” voices, on Android the Google speech services.

Which languages are available?

100 languages – interface and complete vocabulary in each. Switching the language translates the cards; your own changes are preserved. If the device has no voice for the chosen language, the app says so in the settings.

Data and privacy

Where are my cards stored?

Exclusively on your device (in the browser or in the app). Nothing is transmitted to us unless you explicitly enable cloud synchronisation.

Do other visitors see my changes?

No. Every device and every browser keeps its own separate data. Careful with shared devices: whoever uses the same browser on the same computer sees the same cards. Profiles are meant for separating users on one device.

Can I lose my data?

Yes – if the browser storage is cleared or the app is uninstalled. Therefore export your profile regularly via the settings and keep the file safe. The mobile apps also create automatic local backups.

Are there adverts or tracking?

Neither. The app contains no analytics services. The web version only loads fonts for non-Latin scripts from Google; the privacy policy has the details.

Using the app

I forgot the PIN.

The PIN for edit mode is 1234 by default.

How do I delete a card?

Preferably not at all – hide it using the eye symbol instead. That keeps the arrangement of the other cards unchanged, which is essential for learning positions.

Can I use my own photos?

Yes. In edit mode tap a card and choose an image from the gallery (the mobile apps can also take a photo directly). For many children their own photos are easier to understand than abstract symbols.

How many folder levels are possible?

As many as you like. Every folder can contain further folders.

Legal and origin

Where do the symbols come from?

From the Mulberry Symbol Set (licence CC BY-SA 4.0) and from graphics drawn specifically for Temia.

Will health insurance cover anything?

Temia costs nothing, so there is nothing to reimburse. Funding for a dedicated speech generating device is possible in principle – AAC advice centres, medical supply stores and your doctor can help.

Does Temia replace therapy?

No. Temia is a tool. Choosing a communication system and planning support belong in professional hands – speech and language therapy, AAC advice services or a specialist paediatric centre.
