1 Open

Go to temia.online or launch the installed app. No sign-in is required, and a profile with a complete vocabulary is created automatically on first start.

Temia detects the language from your device. If your tablet is set to English, the interface and the cards are in English straight away.

2 Welcome screen

On the very first start a short note explains the most important steps. “Let's talk!” closes it for good.

3 Speak one word

Tap a card. The word is spoken immediately and appears at the top in the sentence bar.

4 Build a sentence

Tap several cards one after another – for example I, want, drink. All words collect in the sentence bar.

Tapping the sentence bar speaks the whole sentence.

5 Correcting

Two symbols sit at the right of the sentence bar: the backspace removes the last word, the bin clears the whole bar.

6 Enter a folder

Along the right edge of the home page you find grey cards with a border: the folders (food, drinks, feelings, people, animals, play, clothes, body, home, places, school, colours & numbers). One tap opens them.

After picking a word the app returns to the home page automatically, so the most frequent words are always just one tap away.

7 Back to the home page

Inside a folder a house symbol appears at the top left. It takes you back at any time.

8 Tap the padlock

You will find a padlock symbol at the top right. After entering the PIN 1234 the app switches to edit mode – recognisable by the coloured banner below the header.

The PIN prevents the child from changing cards by accident while communicating. It is not a security lock but a stumble guard.

9 Tap a card

In edit mode, tap a card. A window opens with all settings for that card:

• Label – the text printed on the card.
• Spoken text – what the app reads out. It may differ: the card can say “grandma” and speak “grandma Helen”.
• Colour – by word class, following the colour key.
• Symbol – see the next step.

10 Choose a symbol

“Choose symbol” lets you search around 3,400 bundled symbols. Type a term (the symbols are named in English, e.g. dog, car, bed) and pick an image.

11 Use your own photo

Your own photos are even clearer: the real cuddly toy, the child's own grandma, the cup from the kitchen. Use “From gallery” to pick an image from the device; the Android and iPhone apps also offer “Take photo”.

Finally tap Save.

12 Tap the plus card

In edit mode every free slot shows a card with a plus sign. When a page is full the app automatically adds an empty row.

13 Card or folder?

You will be asked “What do you want to add?”:

• Card – a word that gets spoken.
• Folder – opens a new, empty page.

Enter the label and confirm with “Create”. You add the symbol afterwards by tapping the new card.

14 Going into a folder

In edit mode every folder card carries a folder symbol at the bottom right. Use it to step inside and create further cards and further folders there – nested as deeply as you like.

This is how you build, for example: My family → Grandma and grandpa, or Nursery → Morning circle.

15 Use the eye symbol

In edit mode every card carries an eye at the top right. It hides the card: it disappears for the child, but its slot stays reserved.

16 Open the settings

The gear wheel at the top right opens the settings. There you find:

• Language – 100 languages. Switching also translates all cards; cards you renamed and your own photos stay untouched.
• Voice – every voice available on the device. Choosing one plays a sample immediately.
• Speech rate and pitch.
• Speak each word immediately – switch off if only the finished sentence should be spoken.
• Show labels – text under the symbols on or off.

17 Create a new profile

Under “Profiles” in the settings, “New profile” creates another vocabulary – for siblings, or for several children in a class sharing one tablet. Every profile has its own cards, its own language and its own voice.

Switching takes one tap on the name.

18 Export a profile

“Export profile” creates a file containing all cards, pages, phrases and settings. Keep that file – it is your backup if the device is lost or the browser storage is cleared.

19 Import a profile

“Import profile” reads such a file back in – on another device too. The import always creates a new profile and never overwrites existing data.

20 Cloud sync (voluntary)

If you wish, create a free account and upload profiles to the cloud. The same vocabulary can then be loaded on several devices – useful when home and school should use the same board. Every backup gets a share code for caregivers. Without an account no data leaves the device.

21 Exchange with other programs

Under “Board exchange” you can export the board in the open Open Board Format (.obz) or import boards from other AAC programs such as CoughDrop or Cboard. Your vocabulary belongs to you and stays portable.

22 Touch hold time

For children with unsteady hands: set a hold time (0 to 1,000 milliseconds). A tap only counts once the finger has rested long enough – accidental brushes are ignored.

23 Switch scanning

For children who cannot point precisely: turn on “Switch scanning”. The rows are highlighted one after another.

• Space – move to the next row or card
• Enter – open the row or select the card
• Esc – back to row selection

Common AAC switches behave like these keys. You can set the speed between 0.5 and 4 seconds.

24 Auditory cues

In addition, Temia can quietly announce the highlighted row before it is selected – helpful with visual impairment and while scanning.

25 Keyboard with word prediction

For children who read and write: the keyboard symbol at the top right opens a writing view. Word suggestions appear above the keyboard and fit better with every use – the app learns exclusively on the device. “Incognito” switches learning off.

26 Save frequent sentences

The star symbol leads to “My phrases”. Save sentences that are needed often – “I'm hungry”, “I'm bored”, “Can I go outside please?”. One tap speaks them, a long press deletes them.

27 Show big and get attention

The keyboard view has two everyday helpers: “Show big” displays the text across the whole screen (useful in noisy places), and the bell button says “Excuse me!” to get attention.

28 Add to home screen

Open temia.online on a phone or tablet and choose “Add to home screen” in the browser menu. Temia then starts with its own icon like a normal app – without an address bar.

29 Working without internet

On the first visit Temia loads everything it needs onto the device. After that the app starts and speaks without a connection – in the car, in the woods, in hospital. Your cards are stored locally anyway.
